Benefitting the Sean Ranch Lough Foundation by raising money for scholarships to Colorado State University for Denver area students
DENVER, CO, USA– Known as “a party with a purpose” Denver Derby Party was started from humble beginnings to become what is now the largest derby party west of the Mississippi. Hosted by the Sean “Ranch” Lough Foundation (SRLF), the party raises money to provide four-year full-ride scholarships to Colorado State University (CSU). Local high school seniors can apply for one of the scholarships, which has helped students from around the world achieve their dreams of attending college.
Sean Lough, known as ‘Ranch’ to his friends, touched many lives with his spirit, aspirations, humor, and kindness. He completed his undergraduate degree at CSU and the purpose of this scholarship program is to commemorate Lough’s life and accomplishments. Scholarships are awarded to students who exhibit the same qualities Lough possessed including having an excellent grade point average, an economic need, and a hearty personality with a love for life.
As a founder and board member, LIV Sotheby’s International Realty broker Ron I. Martinez has invested in the futures of the scholarship recipients and offers mentorship and guidance to the young adults, who in many cases have little to no family. Every Sunday, Martinez calls several of the scholarship recipients to ask them three questions – Are you happy? Are you healthy? How are your grades? 2018 scholar Molly Rosales credits the SRLF for making her feel important and seen and says Martinez has gone above and beyond in making her feel supported throughout her time as CSU.
“I’m so happy to have a role in these kids’ lives while they continue the legacy of our great friend Sean,” said Martinez, who has been dedicated to 22 years of public service. “As a CSU alum, it’s so nice to stay engaged with my alma mater and fraternity brothers in a socially meaningful way.”
Receiving the scholarship in 2019 represented hope, opportunity, and the chance at a better future for Marwan Nassr and his family. It gave him a sense of validation and worth, which in turn created confidence. Samir Mongar, an immigrant from Nepal, earned his scholarship from the foundation in 2022 and it has meant the world to him as a first-generation student and person of color.
2024 Scholars
Scholars are notified by key members of the SRLF in a small check presentation ceremony, typically at their high school, in advance of the Denver Derby Party. The public announcement and presentation of checks happens on the stage at MacGregor Square with CSU President Amy Parsons in attendance.
This year’s recipients, Paola Chavez of Denver West High School, and Victor Fierro-Rayas of Denver North High School exhibit all of the qualities Lough himself possessed. Both scholars will enter CSU as sophomores because they have already earned college credit while in high school. Paola is in the Apprenticeship program at Pinnacle and Victor volunteers at the CSU Temple Grandin Equine Center.
About the Denver Derby Party
This year’s Denver Derby Party took place last month at MacGregor Square in Denver, and welcomed over 3,000 guests from all over the world, including many LIV SIR brokers and support staff. Over the years, the party has raised $7.5 million, sold 152,000 tickets, and given out over 60 scholarships. 100% of all proceeds are used to fund the SRLF.
The atmosphere is electric with party guests in their derby attire, including eclectic hats for those competing in the hat decorating contest. There are several photo opportunities, sponsor booths, food, and live music. After the race, crowd-pleasing DJ Blake Horstmann of Becca Kufrin’s season of The Bachelorette fame, had the crowd on their feet.
